The Hippo House

Games and Hobbies

Maria Montessori said play is the work of the child. And little ones need to play, because it is the best way to learn and the most fun!

Playing has many benefits: it facilitates learning, encourages creativity and teaches you new skills, improves self-confidence, makes us smile, focuses attention,  boosts self-esteem, facilitates endorphin secretion

And in addition, hobbies also bring many benefits to childhood development: they promote attention and focus, allow to develop fine motor skills, help  to develop linguistic competence, enhance the use of logical thinking and creativity, facilitate relaxation, and boost your mood…

Therefore, we’ve prepared a series of games and hobbies for you, that in addition, encourages early self-management of hypoglycemias…

WANNA PLAY?

Memory hypoglycemias

This is the typical match-finding game among a series of tokens laid out on the table face down.

In this case, we have prepared 20 pairs of cards with different symptoms that cause drops in sugar.

It is a game that allows you to play alone or in a group, and depending on age, more or fewer pairs will be used.

Each turn, one of the players picks up two cards to try to form a pair of equal images.

If they are different, put them back as they were and move on to the next player. If you have formed a pair, you keep it. The winner is the player who gets the most pairs.

What are the benefits of playing a memory game?

  • It promotes basic cognitive processes: perception, attention and memory.
  • It helps and allows children to focus on an activity, that is, stimulates concentration.
  • Promotes the development of oral language, since it allows us to use new vocabulary related to the set of images we are using in the game.

Hypo Traffic Lights

This game is designed for kids to learn how to identify whether the number displayed on the screen is okay or if it requires any action to correct the blood glucose value.

By clicking on the link, you will be able to download a PDF with the three faces (red, yellow, green) and tokens with values from 20mg/dL to 200mg/dL. It can be played both individually and as a group.

There are no rules for this game, but we provide you with some ideas to take advantage of it: arranging tokens by number and color until they are finished, organizing the tokens by pairs, using the faces to express how they feel at different sugar values…
